2X Woods Vacation-Church and Looking for penguins, Day 7

Happy New Year!!  We got up early and headed for Queenstown. It was about 1-1/2 hours away. The south island doesn't have many people outside the few major cities. Queenstown has a small branch, so we headed there before traveling over the mountains to begin our trek up the west coast.

Queenstown is a resort town, similar to Jackson Wyoming.  Lots of rich people, even more tourists. The branch has about 20 members, today there were 6 (one family-the counselor in the branch presidency). Not to worry, there were about 30 visitors, and the Elders assigned to labor here. We had a great meeting, with several testimonies. I ended being the chorister. The music was a portable keyboard. The church has rented a home that is very open inside. It was a fun day, and a good experience for the kids.

After church we headed back through Wanaka and over Haast Pass to get to the west coast.  One of our stops was at Blue Pools, a nice walk to loosen up everyone's tired b...., um, legs.  But it was overcast and rainy, so the color wasn't there.  So you get another rain jacket shot.
This water was supposed to be BLUE!

It really was quite comfy, except for trying to keep dry.

After we past Haast and got near the Tasman Sea, Cody had heard of a beach that often has penguins coming in from the sea about dusk.  We had about a 30 minute walk from the parking lot to the sea. It was really a beautiful, surreal place, especially with the off and on light rain.

Nice thing about New Zealand is that you can always get a photo with a fern in the background.

Beautiful sand beach.

We had brought our picnic dinner out to the beach. We found a protected area where the rain didn't get us too wet. We were the only ones there. Literally. Well, JoEllen saw a penguin, but no one else saw it, so maybe one visitor.  We finally gave up and headed back to the van. We still had to drive about 2 hours north to our destination at Fox Glacier. The nice thing about it being summer in December is that we have about 15 hours of daylight.
